English Hilfe
Hello! I am visiting from en.wikipedia. Please forgive the English: meine Deutsch ist nicht so gut, in fact pretty much nonexistant. I struggle somewhat with English, and that is my primary language.
I am of German blood, about one quarter. There is information I would like to glean from Wikipedia Deutsche, but I am not even reading the prompts well enough to navigate. A few articles seem to appear on en.wiki translated from the Deutsch entirely, but many which I would like to read are not present at all. I had hoped I might find a "translate" button, for a computer translation, however rough, which I might start from. If such a thing is still science fiction, surely there are websites which offer German-->English words and phrases?!? I do not mean to be like the arrogant American tourist who expects every European to speak English, but I know that many Europeans are multilingual (unlike Americans, unfortunately), so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. If I have offended, feel free to delete. That's one of my favorite things about Wikipedia: we are encouraged to 'be bold,' and any error or transgression is easily reverted or edited/deleted. Either way, thank you for taking the time to read my message. Ragityman (Diskussion) 20:50, 6. Mär. 2015 (CET)
- Hello Ragityman. Maybe I can help a bit; but it would be usefull to give me/us a hint, what special articles you are looking for. Kind regards from Hamburg, Germany, --CC 20:54, 6. Mär. 2015 (CET)
- To translate phrases only is a bit hard to realize, for in German they may vary in their meanings regarding to their context. In many cases there are "hidden meanings" under the words. OK? --CC 20:57, 6. Mär. 2015 (CET)
- I guess we had an edit conflict. I typed you a message, but it didn't post.
- I said, "Wow, that was quick!"
- Yes, I studied a few languages in highschool, so I understand about the special meanings and the problems of word-for-word and phrase-for-phrase translations.
- An ancestor was a Brause (originally vonBrause), and today I am looking at the article Brause. I love to use the links and jump around the encyclopedia. I'm hoping I can renew my rusty Deutch in the process: kind of an immersion method. Please feel free to point out errors I make as I use German, no matter how trivial. I will try not to repeat them.
- I understand that massive translations take lots of time and effort, and I don't want to impose. I have had some small success with a forum, answers.yahoo.com, for individual words. There are many participants, so for a word or phrase, it works sometimes.
- May I call you Carol, or CC? What time is it in Hamburg? I am in the NA Central time zone: ~2:40 p.m.Ragityman (Diskussion) 21:40, 6. Mär. 2015 (CET)
- Do as you like. Here in Hamburg it's some minutes before 22:00 (wich is 10:00 pm) --CC 21:56, 6. Mär. 2015 (CET)
- In addition: I removed your eMail-Address to prevent you from Spam-Bots, OK? And: Seems as if you're right: this dialog should take place by eMail. You get one from me in some moments. Kind regards, --CC 21:59, 6. Mär. 2015 (CET)
New complications
@CC: I seem, suddenly, to have more serious problems than weak knowledge of German. Gmail is making life very difficult. My internet access at home is limited to my portable device. If I HAVE picked up a virus, I may have to go to a public library to get things straightened out. Deutsche Wikipedia seems to have decided that I have nefarious intent, and I may not even be able to leave this message. I get a warning pop-up box when I attempt to edit, either here, or on your talk page. It's all very tedious.
If there are administrators reading this, I have no intention of breaking any rules or conventions, and certainly do not intend to violate copyright laws, either here, or on en.wikipedia, and I apologize if I have given a contrary impression.
I am presently using a Chrome browser, which repeatedly offers to "TRANSLATE to English?", but only seems to translate the insipid stuff, and certainly not the pop-up warning boxes outlined in RED, which make me fear each knock at the door.
I am going to try again to email you. If I manage to harvest your email address, I may manage to email you using a friend's account. If THIS message doesn't work, I may try your usertalk page, but earlier I got the same ugly red popup on YOUR page. I guess someone has flagged me.Ragityman (Diskussion) 20:26, 8. Mär. 2015 (CET)
- I started a new thread here strictly because I couldn't edit on my phone. I seem to do better using my Chrome download, but then Chrome arbitrarily blinks off, and then I have to start from scratch. I'm primarily trying to communicate with CC, above, but anyone else interested in helping is welcome to join the conversation (haters need not apply!). The auto-trans finally let me know what the angry pop-up is about, but though I no longer feel threatened, the box is still in the way when I try to edit using an Opera browser. Such is life!
- Feel free to leave a message here, but, for the time being, I can't guarantee that I will receive any email sent via wikipedia, until and unless I convince the gmail algorithm that I have violated no TOS. Cheers! Ragityman (Diskussion) 22:21, 8. Mär. 2015 (CET)
Hi Ragityman,
First of all: Don't panic. I'll ask am administrator for help. What kind of box that may be I can't say; need to find out. Possibly you are trapped by an editfilter that is set on my talk page. I'M one of the vandal fighters of de:WP, and get attaced sometimes. So there might be an edit filter, that you see.
As said before - don't panic, we have al the time in the wotld. Kind regards, --CC 09:05, 9. Mär. 2015 (CET)
- I asked an admin to look up the edit filters, but he says, there has been no restriction registered. Are you able to make a screenshot of that box and send it to me by mail? Yes, I know, that there is trouble with it. Please try anyhow. We need the information to help you. --CC 09:46, 9. Mär. 2015 (CET)
