Unzutreffende Darstellung

Den Studentenunruhen der 1968er in Frankreich begegnete er mit Unverständnis und sprach das in der 12. Folge der Civilisation auch deutlich aus. Dieser Satz stimmt so nicht. Wahrscheinlich geht er auf die englische Wp zurück, wo KC zitiert wird (aus Folge 12 der Reihe Civilisation): "I can see them [the students] still through the University of the Sorbonne, impatient to change the world, vivid in hope, although what precisely they hope for, or believe in, I don't know." Dieses Zitat wird aber auch dort schon kritisiert: "The writer has also selectively quoted from what Clark said in program 13 of Civilization, and omitted some of the quotation which would put it in a different light. The general tenor of Clark's remarks about "today's" students was positive, though somewhat bemused. What struck me on re-viewing the program was how un-dogmatic his remarks were, in contrast to this writer, who seems determined to do a nice juicy bit of character assassination."

Wer die Szene kennt weiss, dass Clark den Nachsatz ab although... völlig unterspricht, und er vor den lärmigen Hintergrundgeräuschen kaum mehr vernehmbar ist. In der Buchausgabe fehlt die Stelle dann komplett. Richtig ist lediglich, dass Clark den Marxismus nicht als brauchbare Antwort auf die Unruhe und Sinnsuche der Studenten ansah. Wenn man ihn schon zitieren will, sollte man vielleicht die beiden letzten Sätze nehmen, mit denen er die Serie Civilisation in Folge 13 abschliesst. Sie sind noch heute aktuell, 1968 waren sie geradezu prophetisch: The moral and intellectual failure of Marxism has left us with no alternative to heroic materialism, and that isn't enough.
