The Center for Global Politics unites several international academic programs organized by Prof. Dr. Klaus Segbers at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of Freie Universität Berlin. Founded in 2007, the Center for Global Politics offers the blended learning Master of Arts programs International Relations Online and East European Studies Online, the German-Chinese Graduate School for Global Politics, the one-year supplementary diploma course German Studies Russia, various Seasonal Schools and the professional training certificates. As outlined in its mission statement, the Center for Global Politics wants to offer a European intellectual response to challenges and opportunities caused by globalization, such as global flows of capital, migration, changing educational systems, and labor markets. The Center for Global Politics is supported by an advisory board, which is comprised of distinguished international academics, politicians and business representatives. Background
The Center and its programs are part of Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), a first-rate German University of Excellence with a strong reputation as an international network university. The CGP master’s programs East European Studies Online and International Relations Online address young professionals and have a global outreach, due to their blended learning formats. Summer schools in key regions like China, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Iran cover current questions of global politics and bring excellent students together. The Center offers up-to-date teaching tools and e-learning technologies including audio and video streams. The programs are embedded in flexible professional networks, which are sustainable beyond graduation.
Academic Programs
- International Relations Online (M.A.)
- The M.A. International Relations (IR) Online at Freie Universität Berlin is a master’s degree for professionals who want to pursue their studies whilst staying on the job. The program combines online study (90%) with in-house intensive seminar weeks in Berlin (10%). This blended-learning method provides both the flexibility of a distance-learning program and the advantages of personalized instruction, guidance, and peer-to-peer interaction. IR Online provides expertise in the field of global politics and regional studies.
- IR Online is taught exclusively in English by an international faculty and experts. It can be studied in a full-time option (2 years) and a part-time option (4 years). The program qualifies students for higher positions in governmental agencies, multinational corporations, NGOs, and international organizations.
- European Studies Online (M.A.)
- East European Studies (EES) Online is the first and only online Master’s program in the field of Eastern Europe. It has won the E-learning-award of the Free University of Berlin and has been ranked under the Top 10 international Masters programs in Germany by the German Academic Exchange Service and the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft.
- East European Studies online combines online study (90%) with in-house intensive seminar weeks in Berlin (10%). It provides students with relevant knowledge of Eastern Europe and teaches necessary skills for employment by public and private organizations, which are working with or are located in the region. It also enables students to enter a scientific career. The M.A. EES Online is taught exclusively in English by an international faculty and experts. It can be studied in a full-time option (2 years) and a part-time option (4 years).
- Graduate School of Global Politics (PhD)
- The Graduate School of Global Politics (GSGP) is the first joint doctoral program between China and Germany in the Social Sciences. It invites students to pursue their PhD in a three-year program. GSGP is offered by Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) in cooperation with four Chinese partners: Fudan University, Jinan University, Renmin University and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS).
- PhD candidates of the Graduate School of Global Politics benefit from working with experts in their chosen fields of interest, while focusing on dissertation topics in International Relations (IR) with an emphasis on European-Chinese relations. GSGP provides its students with an international environment, bringing together students and faculty from all around the world.
- Seasonal Schools
- The Global Politics Seasonal Schools are intensive certificate programs lasting up to two weeks for advanced students with a strong background in the political and social sciences. Jointly organized by Freie Universität Berlin and a renowned partner university abroad, each school brings together highly qualified students to exchange and debate current developments in the study of global political and economic phenomena.
- By embracing an interactive teaching style, the schools’ curriculum goes above and beyond traditional methods and perspectives. They integrate state-of-the-art teaching, ranging from theory-based seminars taught by renowned international scholars to interactive working groups and simulation games to online discussions. On top of that, practice-oriented modules and a rich supporting program including excursions to sights of cultural and historical importance, provide a great opportunity to learn about career perspectives with multinational companies and to form lasting connections with young scholars and professionals in the field.
Starting in 2010, the CGP offers a total of five seasonal schools in dynamic world cities around the globe: A Summer School in Istanbul, Tehran, and Shanghai, and a Fall School in Athens and Hanoi.
- "'German Studies Russia
- German Studies Russia is a one-year supplementary program taught in German at MGIMO (U). Students who aim for a career in international institutions or transnational companies are constantly confronted with new challenges as a consequence of increasing international networking. The study program "German Studies Russia" conveys the professional skills to prepare our students for these demands and help set them apart from other future job applicants.
- The learning concept of the program aims to transmit expertise on a high academic level and to strengthen methodological skills through teaching theoretical and practical knowledge, both of which are indispensable on the international market.
Interactive educational tools like simulations, management games, and group work cultivate creativity and social competence. Additionally, the program is set-up with an interdisciplinary focus and teaches to look beyond one's own specialized academic borders and think cross-disciplinarily.
- Professional Training
- The program Professional Training provides intensive and customized preparation for globally acting companies, businesses aiming for international activities or (non-) governmental organizations and their managers or personnel. The content of the seminars and workshops ranges from intercultural communication to soft skills, business practice, political frameworks within the European Union and global trends.
Alumni network
The Center for Global Politics puts an emphasis on establishing and maintaining contact and networks between students, graduates and teachers. Founded in 2008, the alumni network currently connects 800 graduates in over 36 countries. Graduates can also become so-called alumni ambassadors and help to shape the alumni work in their region by organizing talks and meetings. Additionally, alumni ambassadors can attend the annual alumni workshop which takes place alternately in Asia and Europe.
