1. Józef Szmidt born as Schmidt in Germany because Miechowice befor II War was German part of Upper Silesia.
2. Till 1945 he used at home and school only German language.
3. After the war the polish administration change obligatory his name on Szmidt.
4. That means that he is not Polish but Silesian sportsmen
5. On years 70. Szmidt have many seriously problems with polish authorities. He decide in 15 Oct 1975 illegally escape, via Amsterdam, to West Germany.
6. He never meet Mr. Willy Brandt.

First of all, if there is something new about Jozef Schmidt in a polish newspaper, which we cannot read here in Germany, change it in the polish WP and give as a source the Gazeta Wyborcza. Then we can change it here. Now the polish article has nothing about these subjects. And and the Willy Brandt thing has nothing to do with a meeting, but there is source about the escape, then we shoud change it. Es scheint wohl wirklich so zu sein, dass Schmidt zwar als Josef Schmidt geboren wurde, dann nach dem Krieg der Name in Józef Szmidt geändert wurde und er selbst seinen Namen nie wieder zurück verändert hat. Before changing back to wrong version, please try to find somebody who will translate this intervwiew with this sportsman in "Gazeta Wyborcza". German bio in Wikipedia is even mentioned in this story, not in positive way.

First of all, it is clear said that calling him Jozef Schmidt pisses him off:

Wszędzie piszą o mnie Schmidt, a ja przecież nigdy nie wróciłem do niemieckiej pisowni nazwiska. Na zawsze pozostanę już Szmidtem.

Everywhere they write about me as a Schmidt, but I have never back to German name. I'll forever be Szmidt.

So please do not change it back to German Schmidt and absolutely redirect this bio to Józef Schmidt.

About place of his birth: it was small town Miechowice, today district of Bytom, not Michałkowice. Again, he says:

Mówią, że się urodziłem w Michałkowicach, a ja przyszedłem na świat w Miechowicach!

They say I was born in Michałkowice, but I came to the world in Miechowice!

I make no changes about his nationality (Polish, Silesian or German), because at the very end of interview, he describes himself as a European:

- Czuje się pan Polakiem, Niemcem, może Ślązakiem? - pytam Szmidta.

- No co pan? - oburza się. - Jestem obywatelem Europy!

- You feel yourself as Polish, German or Silesian maybe? - I ask Schmidt.

- Stop this crap! - he outrages - I am a citizen of Europe!

Ok, there is an interview in a language I don't understand. I don't know, whether the Gazeta Wyborcza is a truthful source, but I believe so. The spelling of his name (and his birth place) are in numerous sources. A correction of the birth place is in my opinion no problem. A change in the name should be no problem, if there is a redirect. But in my opinion it would be a problem to change the sport results of his career. If his spelling in the official results is Schmidt, this should be the spelling there, probably with this kind of Link: [[Józef Szmidt|Josef Schmidt]]. And the story about the spelling should be written down in the article. Changing the article with a polish source and not telling why is not the way we should act in wikipedia. --Geher 10:38, 24. From tenth year of live, throughout his sport career, till now – he is Józef Szmidt. That is obvious that change of name was forced by Polish communist regime, no doubt about that, his German origin is not denied. Komplette Neufassung

Die Familie war nicht deutschstämmig, sondern deutsch. Keineswegs hat der Protagonist selbst seinen Familiennamen der polnischen Schreibweise angepasst, wie es im bisherigen Artikel hieß, sondern die Namensänderung geschah auf Druck der Behörden der Volksrepublik Polen. In der bisherigen Darstellung fehlen völlig die politischen Aspekte seiner Übersiedlung in die Bundesrepublik, obwohl die zitierten Quellen dazu ausführliche Materialien erhalten.

Die Sportdaten habe ich auf seine Rekorde beschränkt. Gestrichen wurde die detaillierte Aufzählung der genauen Weiten bei jedem seiner wichtigsten Siegen und des jeweiligen Vorsprungs vor den Zweitplacierten. Das mag, wer will, in den WP-Sportstatistiken nachschauen, für ein enzyplopädisches Porträt der Persönlichkeit sind diese Daten irrelevant.

Gescheitert bin ich leider an der INFOBOX. Nun hoffe ich, dass sich ein erfahrener WP-ner findet und dies schnell zurechtrückt. Inhaltlich stimmt alles.F.Gradski (Diskussion) 11:57, 27. Jul. 2013 (CEST)
