Bentley Layton

Bentley Layton (* 12. August 1941) ist ein US-amerikanischer Religionswissenschaftler.

Leben

Er erwarb eine A.B. summa cum laude 1963 in Harvard und den Ph.D. 1971 in Harvard bei Helmut Koester mit der Dissertation: The Treatise on Resurrection (from the Coptic Gnostic Library): Edition, Translation, and Commentary. Ein Privatstudium (1970, 1972–1975) der Koptologie und Linguistik absolvierte er bei Hans Jakob Polotsky in Jerusalem. Seit 1983 lehrt er als Professor für Religionswissenschaft (Antikes Christentum) und Professor für Sprachen und Zivilisationen des Nahen Ostens (Koptisch) an der Yale University.
