Sergei Tchoban (Russian: Сергей Энвероаичь Чобан transliterated: Sergej Ėnverovič Čoban. Russian pronunciation: ser´gei/ t͡ɕòban, born October 9th 1962 is a Russian-born, German architect.


Biography

Sergei Tchoban was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg, Russia), where from 1974 till 1980 he attended the Leningrad Secondary Art School and in 1986 received his degree in Architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts, formerly known as the Ilya Repin Institute of the Russian Academy of Arts in Leningrad.

Career

Tchoban began his career as a freelance architect in Saint Petersburg. In the early 90s he received an invitation from the Association of German Architects Association of German Architects (BDA) followed by an employment at Nietz, Prasch, Sigl Architekten, later nps & Partner and moved to Hamburg, Germany. After their successful collaboration, he joined the partnership and became head of the office in Berlin in 1995.

In 2006 he co-founded the architectural office SPEECH in Moscow, Russia, with projects in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and in other CIS countries. In 2009 he established the Tchoban Foundation – Museum for Architectural Drawing, which opened its doors to the public in June 2013. The Museum now owns Tchoban´s private collection of architectural drawings comprising works by architects from the 17th till the 21st century. The main focus of the museum is to share and promote the classical training in draftsmanship.

Tchoban is best known for designing the Federation Complex in MIBC, in Moscow, Russia, designed together with Professor Peter P. Schweger, the nhow Hotel featuring a professional sound studio in a big cantilevered box and the DomAquarèe complex with a huge aquarium in the hotel lobby in Berlin, Germany. At the 12th and 13th Venice Biennale of Architecture Tchoban curated the exhibition at the Russian Pavilion.
