The John Cranko School

The John Cranko School is a ballet school in Stuttgart. It was founded by John Cranko, the former director of the Stuttgart Ballet.

Historie

In 1961 John Cranko came to Stuttgart. Within a short time he led the Stuttgart Ballet to world fame. He soon planned to found a ballet school in Stuttgart to give up-and-coming dancers the opportunity to complete their training in close contact with the ballet company.[1] In 1971 he turned this idea into reality. In his inauguration speech, he outlined the school's goals as follows: "Without losing the sense of community that has made our ballet company so rich in the diversity of talents, styles, and characters, we intend to educate our future students and give each dancer the best we are capable of."

In 1973 the top two classes officially became a state ballet academy (a vocational school). In Germany this was the first time that young dancing talents had the opportunity for continuous training in classical dance from the lower level to a professional degree with a state diploma. With the growing international importance of the Stuttgart Ballet, the school received a steadily increasing number of students and has since maintained its place among the most recognized ballet schools in the world.[2]

Today, the school consists of the Ballet School of the Württemberg State Theaters (a so-called independent teaching institution) and the State Ballet Academy (a vocational school). The financial sponsorship is shared by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart.[3] To cater to out-of-town and international students, the school has a boarding school and a day boarding school.

From 2015 to 2020, a new building was constructed according to the design of the Munich-based architectural firm Burger Rudacs. [4] It was inaugurated on september the 28th 2020.[5] The new building of the John Cranko School was nominated for the DAM Preis für Architektur in Deutschland. The school was under the four finalists. [6]
