European Museum Academy

The European Museum Academy is a non-profit foundation dealing with the role of museums in contemporary society, innovations concerning museological philosophy, the museographical language and practice. The European Museum Academy functions as a museological think-tank on the practice and future development of museums. The main fields of activities of the European Museum Academy include the judging and awarding of a number of European museum awards (European Museum Academy Awards), the organization of conferences, the preparation of publications, the implementation of EU projects and engagement in various research and training programs.

History

The European Museum Academy is an independent foundation, legally based in the Netherlands. The Academy was established in 2009 by a group of museum professionals and researchers from the university sector, on the tenth anniversary of the death of the distinguished British museologist Kenneth Hudson (1916-1999) who was the primary creator of the European Museum of the Year Award.

Aims

The European Museum Academy reflects the social, educational, economic and ecological role of museums in today's world. The Academy engages in various activities, all of which pursue one goal above all: to enhance excellence of museums at various levels. Therefore it identifies and highlights outstanding museum examples that can function as role models for others. The activities of the Academy comprise forward-looking projects in museological research and practice with a particular focus on museum education and learning.

Organisation

The European Museum Academy gathers a group of approximately 40 experts -all volunteers- active in specific sectors of the museum and heritage world with a proven experience in European programs as well as in national and regional development projects related to museums.

The EMA Representatives

Individual museum experts represent the European Museum Academy in about 40 countries in Europe. The representatives are mainly observing museum developments in their respective countries with the purpose of providing annual reports of the situation. They also help to find candidates for various European museum awards administered by EMA.

The EMA Partners

The European Museum Academy works with an extensive network of cooperation partners who promote the various activities of the Academy. These partners include various international organizations, foundations and ministries in Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden. The cooperation includes various forms of membership, exchange of information, the preparation of joint documents and the implementation of research projects. In addition, there are publications, lectures and the planning of seminars, conferences and other events.

Further Education, Projects, Publications

An important goal of the work of the European Museum Academy is to exchange museological and practical museum knowledge and to promote further education in the museum sector. Since it was founded, the Academy has participated in university courses and (online) courses in museology [4] and in summer schools across Europe. In doing so, it cooperates with various European universities and institutions that are active in continuing education in the field of cultural heritage. The European Museum Academy also acts as a partner in several international research and development projects. It also makes numerous publications available on its website.
