Ekatherina Savtchenko, also with the artist name Ekatherina S, (born November 16.,1965) is a russian/german painter and multimedia artist. Her work is marked by intense color and spatial dynamic, engaging a cosmology in the dialogue between the human body and general forces and energies in a language of signs being one of the main symbolistic approaches of painting today. Her subjects are related to the memory of ancient matriarchy as well as to Russian folk traditions and Russian Constructivism. She is also known for projects engaging a dialogue between cultures, realized in Israel, Iran, India, China, with the Michael Gorbatschow-foundation and twice at the United Nations Building in New York. During the recent COVID-period, she has developed a new body of works entitled "Le Sacre de la féminité" (The Coronation of Feminity) with ironical self-portraits, forming a new genre of neo-feminist allegories. She lives and works in New York City and Düsseldorf.

Life and career

Born 1965 in Leningrad (Sowjet Union), later Sankt Petersburg (Russia), Ekatherina Savtchenko studied first mathematics and computer science. During the Gorbatchev years, she has then been in charge of the computer system of the ministery of commerce in the Soviet Union. With the end of Communism, where an art market and a life as a free artist had not been permitted, she stopped this first career, deciding to live only for painting and visual arts. She studied first painting and graphic arts at the St. Petersburg Art Academy between 1992 and 1994. At this time, she founded the first feminist art group in post-Sowjet Russia, "Art Studio F", who had a big exhibition 1994 at the National Pushkin Museum in St. Petersburg. Her professor in St. Petersburg convinced her to go to Germany in order to develop her work.

She had exhibitions and found important collectors in Germany before entering the famous Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she was appointed by Michael Buthe, one of the first postmodern painters and multi-cultural artists, and, after his early death, was integrated in the class of A.R. Penck, one of the major german artists of the last 60 years.

Penck celebrated this event with a duo-exhibition in Düsseldorf entitled "Penck and his student". Penck had been under surveillance in East Germany, expulsed from the GDR in 1981, spoke perfectly russian and was very aware of cybernetics since the 1960ies, which Ekatherina Savtchenko had integrated with her computer studies. These subjects constituted the main subject of her discussions between her and Penck at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. She made her final degree with A.R. Penck and Jörg Immendorff in 1998 as "Meisterschülerin" (major student) of Penck. Since 1996, she lives and works in New York City and Düsseldorf.

Recent work

"Le Sacre de la féminité", 2020/21

The title of this series of works, "Le Sacre de la féminité" (The Triumph of the Female), alludes to Igor Stravinsky’s "Le Sacre du printemps" (1914), whose matriarchal rituals correspond to the spiritual world of the whole oeuvre of the artist. The first of these self-estranged portraits, "Everything is going Bananas", was created in July 2020 in response to the Corona crisis. The thirteen paintings of this cycle show as many emotional stated, which are traditionnaly associated with allegorical concepts: "What’s next? (cheerful melancholy)", "resurrection (life is resurrection)", "motherhood", "goddess of the world" et cetera. With humor and triumphant imprudence, they form an encyclopedia of feminity in the era of triumphant feminism.[1]
