Herkunft
Alfred Rawlinsons Eltern waren der Offizier, Diplomat und Archäologe (Assyrer-Forschung) Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson, 1. Baronet (1810−1895) und Louisa Caroline Harcourt Seymour († 1889). Der Vater gilt als als einer der Entzifferer der Keilschrift. Alfreds älterer Bruder ist Henry Rawlinson, 1. Baron Rawlinson (1864–1925), Truppenkommandant in mehreren Feldzügen, im Ersten Weltkrieg Kommandeur der IV. Armee Oberbefehlshaber der britischen Streitkräfte in Indien von 1920–1925

Flugpionier
Rawlinson was a polo player in the 1900 Summer Olympics and was a member of the Foxhunters Hurlingham polo team which won the Olympic gold medal. He was also a keen motor racing driver, resigning from the army to concentrate on the sport. He took part in the 1908 Isle of Man RAC Tourist Trophy ("TT") race, driving his Darracq into 7th place.[nb 1][5]
On 5 April 1910 Rawlinson became only the third person in the United Kingdom to hold a Royal Aero Club aviators certificate.[6]
