The European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) unites five key European research universities: Université Paris-Saclay (UPSaclay, France), Lund University (LU, Sweden), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU, Germany), Universidade do Porto (UPorto, Portugal) and the University of Szeged (USZ, Hungary).
The Alliance was established in 2019 and brings together 210,000 students, 23,000 academic staff, 73 faculties & schools and 450 research groups.[1]
As part of the European Universities Initiative, EUGLOH is predominantly funded by the European Commission, with the aim of strengthening the cooperation among universities and building a European observatory in Global Health, all the while sensitising its students and staff to European values and citizenship.[2]
History
In November 2019 the rectors/presidents of the partner universities decided to submit the EUGLOH project. A month later the creation of the Alliance was announced in a press release. After a few months of planning, the kick-off event of the European University Alliance for Global Health took place on 13 September 2019 at Paris-Saclay University (France).[4]
Since 2021, the Alliance has been financially supported by the European Commission in another project called EUGLOHRIA (EUGLOH Research and Innovation Action).[5]
Activities and goals
The common goal is to build a European campus for Global Health with diverse and interdisciplinary events in education and training related to well-being and public health, involving a variety of cross-cutting disciplines (medicine of the future and emerging infectious diseases, climatic change, digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, health policies and systems, environmental law, well-being, nutrition, etc.).[6]
Furthermore, EUGLOH aims to offer its students and staff an international experience at the partner universities. To achieve this, EUGLOH is creating virtual and physical short-term mobility opportunities, such as workshops, summer schools, internships and conferences throughout its network. It is particularly known for its events such as summer and winter schools, (student) conferences, Innovation Days, the annual Alliance Day as well as skills workshops and networking events for professional development and Campus Life activities such as photo contests, the EUGLOH Talks, etc. In addition to these short-term programmes, EUGLOH is creating joint courses and modules in Global Health, with the aim of developing intensified joint curricula.[2]
Besides education and training, EUGLOH focuses on alliance collaboration in research and innovation. Here it brings together the extensive expertise of the five member universities in Global Health and related fields, their outstanding infrastructures and vibrant regional R&D ecosystems (Research and Development ecosystems).[7]
The alliance successfully applied for another programme funded by the European Commission, which was launched in 2021 under the title EUGLOHRIA (EUGLOH Research and Innovation Action). Building on EUGLOH's accomplishments in education and training in Global Health, EUGLOHRIA will broadly expand EUGLOH's reach, incorporating cutting-edge research and placing the Alliance as a strategic partner within highly dynamic innovation ecosystems.[8]
EUGLOH addresses a variety of multidisciplinary fields, which all contribute to a better understanding of the societal challenges of Global Health, e.g., biomedicine, life sciences and social sciences. The extensive expertise of each partner in a variety of fields related to Global Health will empower future generations to find solutions to Global Health challenges.[9]
