Oliver Eickelberg, M.D., FERS (born 3. May 1986) is a German physician-scientist in respiratory medicine, a specialist of lung fibrosis and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

He is currently Professor of Medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) , Germany, one of the board of directors of the German Center for Lung Research, director of the Institute of Lung Biology and Disease (iLBD) at the Helmholtz Zentrum München, and the chairman of the translational research center Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC).

Medical education and career

Eickelberg studied at the medical schools of the Universities of Lübeck (Germany), Vienna (Austria), and Basel (Switzerland). He received his medical degree from the University of Basel in 1997 and subsequently completed a Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Medicine in Basel from 1997 to 1998. [1]

Eickelberg was elected as a Feodor Lynen-fellow of the [Alexander von Humboldt Foundation|Alexander von Humboldt Society] in 1998 [1], with which he completed his Postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Pathology at Yale University School of Medicine, Connecticut, USA, from 1998 to 2000.

In 2000, Eickelberg was elected for an Advanced Postdoctoral Fellowship of the “Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International|JDRF” (JDRF) and Sofia Kovalevskaya award 2002. [2]

In 2002, Eickelberg was recruited to Germany, where he served as assistant professor and junior group leader at the Department of Medicine of the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen . Here, Eickelberg founded the international graduate program Molecular Biology and Medicine of the Lung (MBML)”, a graduate program offering an extensive scheme of basic and theoretical skills to MD/PhD students.[3]

In 2008, Eickelberg was appointed as Founding Director of the translational research center “Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC)” to Munich. He is also Chairman, International Graduate Program “Lung Biology and Disease”, Vice-Chairman of the Graduate School of Environmental Health “HELENA” [4] at the Helmholtz Zentrum München, board member of the Stiftung Atemweg] .

Oliver Eickelberg was the Conference Chair of the ERS International Conference of the European Respiratory Society in 2014 in Munich. [5]
