Infant Annihilator ist eine britische Deathcore-Band aus Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, welche 2012 von dem Schlagzeuger Aaron Kitcher und dem Gitarristen Eddie Pickard gegründet wurde.[1] Die Band ist bekannt für ihren technisch geprägten, vielschichtigen und extremen Stil bekannt. Darüber hinaus satirisch graphic lyrical content and shock humour;[2] and music videos that feature ribald themes.[3][4]

Infant Annihilator wurde vom Hysteria Magazine als "internet band" [3] bezeichnet. Auch wenn sie eine Live-Tour nicht ausschließen, existiert die Band bisher nur als Studio-Projekt.[5][6]

History

Gründung und The Palpable Leprosy of Pollution (2012–2013)

Infant Annihilator wurde 2012 in Hessle in der nähe von Kingston upon Hull von dem Gitarrist Eddie Pickard und dem Schlagzeuger Aaron Kitcher gegründet.[1] Der Name "Infant Annihilator" stammt von einem Gleichnamigen Song von Kitchers ehemaliger Band "As the Blessed Fall". Der Name wurde bewusst als Parodie auf stereotypische Namensgebung von Death Metal-Bands ausgewählt.[5] In einem Interview von 2016 heißt es:

Pickard und Kitcher schrieben und produzierten die Instrumentale für ihr Debüt-Album The Palpable Leprosy of Pollution in einer Aufnahmesoftware auf Pickards computer. Nach der Online-Veröffentlichung dieser Songs, kamen die beiden Musiker mit dem amerikanischen Vokalisten Dan Watson aus Indiana über das Internet in Kontakt. Dieser war auf Infant Annihilator über Facebook aufmerksam geworden.[7][8] Pickard und Kitcher waren von seinem Können beeindruckt, daher baten sie ihn darum, den Gesang für das Album zu übernehmen.[9][5][8] Schon bald hatten sie online viralen Erfolg mit der ersten Veröffentlichung erlangt. Das Musikvideo zu ihrem Song "Decapitation Fornication" hatte bereits nach einem Monat rund 20.000 positive Bewertungen auf YouTube erreicht.[3][8]

Nach der Veröffentlichung des Musikvideos bewarb die Band die Veröffentlichung des ersten Albums. Als Datum wurde der 12. Dezember 2012 (12.12.12) gewählt. Diese Idee kam von Dan Watson, dem Sänger der Band. Im Nachhinein bereute Watson diese Idee jedoch, da ihm durch den Zeitdruck weniger Zeit für die Aufnahmen blieb, wodurch er schlussendlich unzufrieden mit dem Endergebnis bei Veröffentlichung war.[8]

Ende 2013 verließ Watson die Band, bekanntgegeben wurde es am 22. Februar 2014.[10][11] Später erklärt er, dass er sich nicht gleichwertig mit dem Rest der Band gefühlt hatte. Außerdem fühlte er sich außen vor gelassen, da er bei Vertragsverhandlungen nicht mit einbezogen wurde.[7][8] Nach seinem Ausstieg gründete Watson die in Washington angesiedelte Deathcore-Band Enterprise Earth mit dem Gitarrist BJ Sampson. Mit Infant Annihilator steht er noch in gutem Kontakt.

Neuer Sänger und The Elysian Grandeval Galèriarch (2014–2017)

In late 2014, while he was drumming for fellow UK band Desolated during their first US tour, Kitcher met vocalist Dickie Allen in person for the first time. The tour line-up included the band Traitors, who had brought Allen, a close friend, along with them on the tour. Hearing Allen's vocals in person convinced Kitcher that he was a good fit for the band.[5][6] Infant Annihilator announced via social media on 1 June 2016 that they had brought on Dickie Allen as their new vocalist.

The album was Infant Annihilator's first to chart, making it onto several Billboard charts, including the Top Heatseekers, Independent Albums, Top Album Sales, Top Rock Albums, and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.[12]

The Battle of Yaldabaoth (2019–present)

On 25 July, Infant Annihilator posted a music video for their first single "Three Bastards" to YouTube, along with the upcoming album’s release date, title, art, track list, and preorder information. The Battle of Yaldabaoth was released on 11 September.[13]

Musical style and influences

Infant Annihilator plays the genre known as deathcore.[3] They have also been said to carry some influences from technical and brutal death metal.[5] Their lyrical content is intentionally extreme and covers controversial topics such as rape, paedophilia, murder, infanticide, "mass programming", religion, cult,[5] and the Catholic Church. These topics are derived from the history of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.[3] At one point, their music was deemed "too offensive" and was removed from Spotify and iTunes as a result,[14][15] but was soon returned to both platforms three days later.[15]

They have listed various subgenres of death metal and hardcore punk to be influential to their music, including: deathcore, slam death metal, technical death metal, “down-tempo hardcore”, grindcore and mathcore.

Artists they have taken influence from include: Carnifex, Bring Me the Horizon (early deathcore era, à la Count Your Blessings), System of a Down, Slipknot, Chimaira,[5] Despised Icon, Thy Art Is Murder, The Black Dahlia Murder, Beneath the Massacre, Cattle Decapitation, Waking the Cadaver, and GG Allin.[6]
