Tempo (Time), a weekly publication and Mozambique's first illustrated news magazine, was founded by a group of Mozambican journalists in 1970. Each issue included a full-color cover and advertisements, many black-and-white photographs, articles covering current events, sports, and culture, as well as comic strips and editorials. The magazine was an immediate success, distributed not only in the capital Maputo (then Lourenço Marques), but also throughout the country and in other Portuguese-speaking countries. Its photographic team featured some of Mozambique's leading photographers, including Ricardo Rangel and Kok Nam.
Although subject to censorship by the Portuguese colonial regime, and thus severely restricted until after the coup overthrowing the Portuguese government in April 1974, Tempo reflected a new perspective in its commentary and cautiously pursued investigative reporting. Tempo played an important role in the transition from colonial rule, giving strong support to the Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO). In effect, Tempo became Mozambique's journal of record for key political events not only in Mozambique but across the entire region.
A team from the Arquivo Historico de Mocambique has digitized nearly the entire run of Tempo up to 1980.
