Jiyan Foundation is committed to a society in which human dignity is respected, adults and children can exercise their right to life and personal freedom, and citizens can live free of torture and terror.contents

History

Originally named Kirkuk Center for Torture Victims in 2005, founded by child youth therapist Salah Ahmad, it was the first organization in Iraq created specifically to provide victims of torture, genocide and persecution with medical, psychological and social rehabilitation services.[1]

Since 2005, the program expanded continuously, providing medical, psychological, legal, and social services to refugees and internally displaced people, and survivors of torture, genocide and persecution. There are specific programs for women and girls, as well as children and adolescents.

Today it runs a network of twelve facilities in northern Iraq and northern Syria and provided treatment to over 20,000 survivors of violence.[2] Jiyan Foundation runs rehabilitation centers for traumatized victims of human rights violations in Kirkuk, Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, Halabja, Chamchamal, Dohuk and Alqosh and also maintains an office in Berlin.

All services are provided free-of-charge. The Jiyan Foundation also operates mobile units that travel to different refugee camps in the Kurdish region.[3] The organization employs more than 200 local staff and treats 5,000 clients annually.

Mission and Values

Jiyan Foundation follows the core values set out in the Universal declaration of Human Rights by helping survivors of human rights violations, regardless of their age, gender and ethnic or religious affiliation with the purpose of empowering those affected by human rights violations in the exercise of all their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.

Programms

Jiyan Foundation works in five main areas:

Program for Trauma Care and Health

Violence and human rights violations can lead to a variety of problems which affect an individual’s physical, emotional and social well-being. Jiyan Foundation supports survivors in Iraq and Syria through medical assistance, psychological treatment, specialized trauma therapy as well as social services. In order to help survivors recover, the following medical treatments are provided:

·       Comprehensive medical diagnostics

·       General medical and pediatric treatment

·       Psychiatric care

·       Physiotherapy and pain treatment

·       Referral to medical specialists and hospitals

Program for Rights and Justice

Iraq and Syria have a long history of violent conflict, human rights abuses and lawlessness. The experience shows that justice plays an important role in coping with trauma. However, due to their economic situation or lack of information, many people have no access to legal advice or representation. To respond to this need, Jiyan Foundation employs a team of lawyers who help ensure that survivors have access to their rights as specified in international human rights law. The Foundation offers general legal advice and Representation in court and offices, as well as documenting of human rights violations for future legal proceeding.

Program for Democracy and Civil Society

The Jiyan Foundation is committed to a diverse, tolerant and democratic society in Iraq. To achieve these goals, students are taught about human rights, dialogue events are organized as well as networks of young people who are committed to peace and democracy in their country are being supported.

Program for Training and Capacity Building

Since the beginning of the activities in 2005, the Jiyan Foundation has seen a chronic shortage of mental health professionals in Iraq and Syria. In particular, there are no trained psychotherapists, as there are no training programs for this subject in Iraq. In order to better respond to the complex needs of those affected, Jiyan Foundation invests in the regular training of local specialists and staff.

Program for Monitoring and Research

Jiyan Foundation attaches great importance to regularly measuring the results of their work as well as researching the effectiveness of psychological and social services in conflict regions.
