Rezeption
Onimasa, opening today at the Carnegie Hall Cinema, is not an easy film to warm up to. Mr. Gosha, whose Goyokin (1971) was a samurai movie with an anachronistic, late-20th century social conscience, is an extremely fancy movie-maker with a fondness for pretty images and overstated melodrama. When it's almost tolerable, Onimasa recalls the the kind of excesses over which Luchino Visconti triumphed in Rocco and His Brothers and The Damned, but which defeated him in Ludwig.
