Da EBM seine Wurzeln einerseits im Electro-Punk (DAF) bzw. Minimal Electro und andernseits im britischen Industrial (Cabaret Voltaire) hat, zeichnet es sich durch dementsprechende Rhythmusstrukturen aus. Der Rhythmus ist eher klar, sehr tanzbar und teilweise Stakkato-artig. Gemeinsam ist fast allen EBM Stücken der Parolen-artige, gerufene Gesang (z.B. unüberhörbar bei Nitzer Ebb). Melodische Elemente werden eher sparsam eingesetzt und dienen der Begleitung von Rhythmus und Gesang. Verzerrte oder gar flächenhafte Sounds, wie bei Nachfolgestielen, werden selten bzw. gar nicht eingesetzt.

Tanzstile

Ähnlich wie beim Punk tanzte man in den 80ern überwiegend Pogo. Dieser Stil wurde jedoch bald aus den Clubs verbannt und musste einem „gepflegten“ und – noch lange nach dem Ende der EBM-Ära – begehrten 3-Schritte-Tanz weichen.

Einfluss auf andere Stilrichtungen

Als begonnen wurde EBM-untypische Sounds mit EBM Rhythmen zu mischen, begannen sich neue Stile zu entwickeln. Diese werden heute einfach unter Elektro zusammengefasst, beinhalten aber insbesondere die Stile Dark Electro, Hardcore Electro und Electro Industrial. Gemeinsam sind ihnen einerseits die Rhythmen aus dem EBM, andernseits teils verzerrter Gesang oder Sounds, teils flächenhafte Soundarrangements oder Einflüsse aus Noise oder dem klassischen Industrial.

Keinen musikalischen Einfluss übte EBM jedoch auf Future Pop aus, auch wenn letzterer vor allem von Marketing Abteilungen als EBM klassifiziert wird. Lediglich die Überschneidungen in der Subkultur machen den einen Stil unter Anhängern des anderen Stils (wenn auch nicht immer wohlwollend) bekannt. Die musikalischen Wurzeln von Future Pop liegen jedoch im Eurodance. Ähnliches gilt für Gothic. Auch hier liegt die Berührung in der Subkultur. Überschneidungen im musialischen Bereich geschahen frühestens mit den Nachfolgestilen des EBMs zu einer Zeit als EBM nicht mehr existierte.
