dear erikvisser,

thanks a lot for the nice photo of a "violoncello piccolo" player which makes the article more "up to date" since it refers to a recent recording.

in two points, it sort of contradicts the information given in the text, so I kindly ask you two questions. I don't want to change it by myselft since it is your photo:

1. I believe it might be better matched to call it something similar to "fünfsaitiges Violoncello" in the place of "violoncello piccolo".

2. the player is using the thumb. it is mostly certain that the thumb was not used in this music. as I play myself, I know the problem even in the 6th bach suite, to reach those far-away notes without using the thumb. on the other hand, it is most probable that that is what contemporary players did: using the first and fourth finger istead of thumb and third finger. of course, nowadays we are not used to this uncomfortable fingering, and I even think using the thumb is the better solution. the photo might induce once more that discussion lately started by kujken, proclaiming that the 6th suite was made for viola da spalla players.

perhaps you have another photo of this pretty cello player where she is not using the thumb? I personally would appreciate it very much, and since this is one of the rare articles on this subject that go a little bit under the surface of platitudes, it would help even the subject....

best wishes,
