Mohrenheim the criminal
According to George F. Kennan's, The Fateful Alliance (published 1984 by Pantheon Books), Mohrenheim had accepted numerous bribes during his career as a diplomat, amounting to 500,000 French Francs in 1891 (the equivalent of over $5.7 million in 2017 US dollars, using the value of gold as the conversion). There is speculation that Mohrenheim had embarrassing information on both the French and Russian governments, which kept both silent, had either wanted to pursue criminal charges.
