Arthur Tappan Pierson, 1886

Arthur Tappan Pierson (* 6. März 1837 in New York City; † 3. Juni 1911 ebenda) war ein amerikanischer presbyterianischer Pastor, Missionar und Schriftsteller, der über 13.000 Predigten verfasste, über fünfzig Bücher schrieb und Bibelvorlesungen als Teil eines „transatlantischen Predigtministeriums“ hielt, das ihn in Schottland, England und Korea berühmt machte.

Er war Berater für die Studienbibel von Cyrus I. Scofield (Scofield-Bibel, 1909) und ein Freund von Dwight Lyman Moody, George Müller (dessen Biographie George Müller of Bristol er schrieb), Adoniram Judson Gordon und Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Während seiner gesamten Laufbahn bekleidete Pierson mehrere Kanzelpositionen auf der ganzen Welt und engagierte sich in der Armenfürsorge.

Ebenso war er ein Pionier der Glaubensmissionen und entschlossen, die Welt in seiner Generation zu evangelisieren. Vor 1870 gab es nur rund 2000 Missionare aus den Vereinigten Staaten in Vollzeitdienst, von denen etwa zehn Prozent in der Arbeit unter den Indianern tätig waren. Eine große Bewegung ausländischer Missionen begann in den 1880er Jahren und beschleunigte sich bis ins 20. Jahrhundert, teilweise aufgrund der Arbeit von Pierson. Er fungierte als „Elder statesman“ der Missionsbewegung und war im späten 19. Jahrhundert der führende evangelikale Befürworter von Auslandseinsätzen. Nach seiner Pensionierung besuchte er 1910 Korea. Sein Besuch war Auslöser, 1912 das Pierson Memorial Union Bible Institute zu gründen (heute Pyeongtaek University).
