Life and Work

Imke David grew up in Franconia in Erlangen in a large musical family. As a 6-year-old she was a member of the seven-member gamba ensemble made up her family members, with whom she performed frequently well into her professional life.

As gifted musician, she was admitted as a junior student in 1986 to the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. There, she studied Early Music, majoring in viola da gamba with Jordi Savall. After a short period of study under Savall, she became a steady member of his ensemble HesperionXX performing and recording widely.

Formative influences during her study’s in Basel were Jesper Christensen, Andreas Staier and René Jacobs. Professional appearances soon followed with Cantus Cölln, Concerto Palatino, Concerto Vocale under the direction of René Jacobs, Hesperion XXI under the direction of Jordi Savall, Le Concert des Nations. She was the first Gambe player to be awarded a prize at the international competition for Early Music in Bruges,

, where she performed both Early Music as well as New Music.

Imke David performs internationally as a gamba player and has taken part in radio broadcasts and is well represented on many CD recordings. Between the years 1991 to 1996, she commissioned and performed mode works for the viola da gamba. A series of notable compositions for solo game were composed for her by the composer Art Clay, which she premiered and recorded. With the project "Broken Words", a text and music - Performance with Urs Jaeggi (text) Art Clay (live electronics) and Imke David ( Air-Bow), she explored the use of the Gambe and Lirone in diverse settings including Hoerspiel and Music Theatre.

As a researcher, she is one of the first musicians, to undertake research on the Italian Early Baroque continuo instrument lirone and to develop a historically correct chordal style of playing on the 13-string string instrument.

The use of the Lirone is similar to that of the Organ similar and its timbre was particularly sought for underpainting of Lamentation and recitative s in the performance practice in the works of Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries.

Since 2010, Imke David is a professor of viol, Lirone and violone at the Department of Early Music at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt. There ,she teaches in addition to the interpretation of the different styles of European Renaissance music early and High Baroque, She is also active in international competitions as a judge.
